Heather Ridge Jan. 2, 2010

Snow Pit showed an easy sheer and compression failure in recent snow. Moderate sheer surface on top of rain crust. Very easy sheer under rain crust. Easy to moderate sheer and compression failure on low density snow underneath. Base snow was somewhat faceted, but wouldn't move.

Our route was very conservative form here on out. Convex minor ridges and features and no rollies. Only minor relases on hard ski cuts, but a symphony of whoomps and snaps followed us all the way to the stream...and all the way back up.

From the top of the ridge, we had a nice view of the tracks of someone's descent of what I call "Happy Face" (aka Baldy), with the adjacent slope showing a 2-3' slab that covered several acres.
